Learn How to Follow Your Heart and Do what you Love

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” Steve Jobs

Every day after I followed my heart and quit my corporate job in insurance has been interesting to see how different the day feel. How much excitement is in the air. How I can’t wait to start each day every morning and don’t want to turn the lights off to go to sleep. I am no longer dreaming and imagining my dream life, I am living it.

What a difference it has made to have the courage to hand in my resignation letter and decide to live my life. The life I have designed and created. The life I am excited to live because its life on my terms.

Don’t get me wrong, its definitely not easy, its really hard. You start to realise that where you are in life right now is as a result of all the small decision you have made along the way. If you want to be somewhere else, to achieve something different. Then you need to take responsibility for this change. The important part is to have the discipline to do the hard work even when you don’t feel like it.

Be Ready for Change

The idea that I had for my life when I quit my job is very different to what I am doing now and how I am living my life. But I never would have got to where I am if I hadn’t set a goal and started working towards it. Its only after you have experienced something that you really understand if its what you want. If you don’t take that first step towards a new future one year from now, ten years from now you will be in the exact same place. Would you be happy with this?

Then why are you so afraid of change?

Do you have the passion to make your vision come true?

Once you have your vision, once you can see it with absolute clarity every single little detail you will need all the passion you have to keep at it. Inspiration is good but it never lasts. You need your passion to keep you going when the going gets tough. When you start to feel the resistance. Your passion will need to be the one pushing you from behind to keep going. You are probably used to your parents pushing you or your teacher or lecturer pushing you. Now its up to you and you need to call on your passion to help you push yourself. Push yourself enough to make your vision become a reality. This is where you need to have a deep understanding of why you want your vision. Why do you truly want the life you have envisioned. Understand your why and it will be clear to you that any obstacle or resistance won’t last long. You will overcome it because your why is stronger than anything that comes up against your new life.

Keep Raising your standards

If you don’t know what Progressive overload is then you need to start googling. I needed to when I first got told about it. If you keep doing the same things it will just get easier you need to use progressive overload to your advantage so that you can keep growing. Keep pushing the boundaries. If you aren’t growing then you standing still and that’s not a good thing.

You need to keep raising your standards so that you keep having to reach for your goals. You don’t want it to be easy. If its easy you will lose interest. You want it to challenge you just enough. If you get tired rest just long enough to recover and no more then try again.

Do the push ups

If I ask you to do as many push-ups as you can do. How many do you think you could do until you collapse and you feel like you have nothing left in you?  20? 30? 50?  Then what if I asked you to rest for a bit and asked you to do it again?

Do you think you could do some more push ups? Of course you could. How come you can do more? Because you have more in you than you think!

Never lower your standards always keep them high and keep making them higher.

Karl Oftebro Learn How To Follow Your Heart And Do What You Love

Find your Love

Find what you love and make that your lifes work. Work is going to take up a large portion of your life. Why not spend it doing something you love?

Once you do your days will be different and you will wonder what you did with all your time before. Once I quit my insurance job and started doing what I love photography, filmmaking adventure, creating and building things. It all changed

Suddenly I had more energy. I was more excited to get going in the morning. I started forgetting to eat. When last did you enjoy your work so much you forgot to eat?

Thats when you know you are really in the flow. You are engrossed in what you love. Don’t settle if you haven’t found what you love yet. You will find it you just need to keep looking.

Here is a good quote for you

“Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Can you guess where it is from?

If you are thinking about following your heart and doing what you love leave me a comment below I would love to hear all about it. Make it a commitment to yourself leave me a comment with the first small step that you are going to take to get started on your journey to your new life of doing what you love.

It can be as small as getting a journal and writing down some goals. You will be amazed at what a small action like this can do to change the course of your life.

How to learn new skills online

How to Learn New Skills Online

Learning how to learn new things online is an acquired skill. Anyone can learn something online the determining Factor in whether it is a successful learning venture is the time that it takes to acquire the new skill.  Anyone can go out and learn something new. There is so much information available on the internet for free that everyone has access to. The valuable information is information that is organized in such a way has to deliver value in a concise organized manner.

How to Learn New Skills Online

Now I enjoy learning new skills

I never used to enjoy learning new things. Now I go out and seek new opportunities to learn new skills because I now understand that learning new skills makes me more valuable and resourceful. Which means that I can add more value to people around me. That is why I started this Blog Personal Digital Development to share the power of digital learning with the world.

If you are interested in getting started learning online one of the best places to start is understanding how we learn. There is a course from Coursera called learning how to learn and the best part about it is that it’s free click the link to have a look at it.

How to learn new skills online and why is it important?

It is really easy to get started learning online. A person’s first point of call is normally Google or YouTube. This is where the search for new skills normally starts.

Let’s take Google because it’s the most popular. When we need to learn something new we don’t ask our parents anymore,  we don’t ask our grandparents anymore we ask Google.

Google & YouTube

Google returns what it deems to be the best answers for us.  These answers and solutions are provided by website owners, companies and Bloggers.  The second most popular search engine is YouTube. The search for solutions on YouTube has been trending up recently as people begin to prefer consuming content quicker and faster in video format.

The problem with the solutions that Google and YouTube provide are there these Solutions are provided by anyone and everyone.

This is a good and bad thing. The good is that everyone can share their knowledge and learning from their experiences with everyone else. The bad thing is no one is vetting and curating this content. To check if it is in fact true and unbiased.  How do you then know that we can trust the information provided to us.

Trusted Information & the power of peer Reviews

The power of peer reviews.  Peer reviews are more powerful than you think. They provide validation and a form of trustworthiness that we need. In order to decide whether we can believe certain information provided from certain individuals and companies. If you break it down that’s all the internet really is is information organized in different shapes and forms.

By being able to validate how trustworthy a solution is allows us to decide whether we believe the information provided on said website or video is in fact trustworthy and believable.

Learning through Online Courses

As this information is organised and presented in an improved timeworthy manor the cost to access information increases.  This is where the industry of online courses has exploded in the last decade. People are taking information organising it packaging it and presenting it in a formalized easy to follow manor and then charging a fee for this.

Time is Money

What you are really paying for is the time that it will save you to do the research. Find the information and organise it in your mind.  You are paying to access information faster.

A  lot of people have issues with the online course community because they are generally speaking charging money for information that is freely available on the internet.

What they don’t understand is the value that these courses deliver.  If you have ever enrolled in an online paid course that was valuable to you. That you learnt a valuable skill from it is worth every cent that you spend on it. Depending on your marginal utility that you gain from it.  It all comes down to personal preference.

For me I love paid online courses and I’ve learnt so much since I started studying online.

Here are a few courses that I have enrolled in:

The best investment you could make

What do you think the best investment you could make is?  The best investment you could ever make is investing in yourself. This will  yield a higher return then any other investment you could find.

I remember my boss telling me this after my first month of working back when I had a job. Back then I didn’t quite understand what he meant but now I do.  Now that I’ve learnt new skills. I understand how these new skills have helped me deliver more value as an individual. Become more valuable to society and with this deliverability of more value comes better remuneration.  Which is very rewarding.

Where do I start learning new skills online

So how do you know where to start.  I always start with my desire and I ask myself what is it that I truly desire.  then I’ll reverse engineer the process from where I want to be to where I am today.  then ask myself what skills do I need to learn in order to achieve what I desire. in other words what do I need to do in order to achieve the output that I want.  when you break it down like this it helps you get clarity and makes it look nice and simple.

Let’s looking in at an example.  Let’s say that I wanted to take photographs on the weekends and in my spare time to make some extra money on the side.  what do I desire, I want to start a side hustle that will make me some extra money on the side doing what I enjoy taking photographs.  now I start reverse engineering it what skills do I need to learn in order to achieve this.

Firstly I’ll need to understand how my camera works and how to use all of the settings on it to take professional looking for the photographs.  Secondly I will need to learn how to promote myself as a photographer. Thirdly how to sell my services. Now I have 3 things that I need to learn photography camera settings, marketing, and sales.

Taking the 3 skills that I need to learn. I need to find a way of learning these skills. The first option is by reading blog posts that I found on Google and watching videos that I find on YouTube.

The advantage of doing this is that it is free the disadvantages are the fact that the information will not be organized in the correct order for me to learn I will need to find everything in the correct order and try and learn it by reading or watching the information in the correct order without getting distracted and ending up reading or watching different topics.  this can be very challenging with all the temptation and clickbait that is out there.

The second option will be to find and established online course reputable teacher that other students have enjoyed and recommend for example this course on Udemy bye Phil Ebiner and other instructor on photography these instructors have had insert number of students and insert number of reviews with this information at hand I was more than happy to spend 120 to access this course and have my learning path presented to me in an organized and concise manner knowing that I would learn everything that I need to know and if I had any questions I could ask my instructors.

Now which method  do you prefer leave us a comment Below and let us know.

Why I quit my Job to become comfortable with being uncomfortable

I quit my job to seek discomfort. As human beings we seek comfort for security because we know what certainty what it feels like. We hate the feeling of uncertainty and yet this is where we grow the most. So why do we avoid it so much?

When I look back on my life it was all the hard uncomfortable parts of my life that really made me grow and become the person that I am today.

That is why I decided to go out and seek the uncomfortable and quit my job. I went out looking for it because I know it will feel terrifying. I want to feel the fear running through my veins and then take the leap.

Karl Oftebro Why I quit my Job

Talking about it and actually doing it are two very different things

This is really easy to write about but to actually go out and do it. That’s a different story all together. That is why I like to write about my experiences and not my ideas.

It is so hard to see where you are going when you are battling through the uncomfortable parts.

Steve Jobs said it well you can’t connect the dots looking forward you can only connect the dots looking back.

Admitting to yourself that you have been climbing a ladder for 5 years that is leaning against the wrong building is not the easiest thing to do.

Its not easy to be humble and admit the mistake that you have made.

Its even harder to admit it to yourself.

What I have learnt from my experience of realizing I had chosen the wrong career is that I have been treating failure all wrong.

DM with Karl Why I quit my Job

I used to be ashamed of failure.

Now I have learnt to embrace failure, because there is a lesson that you need to learn in order to achieve the success that you desire.

Ray Dalio said it well in his book Principles: Life and Work

Failure is a step towards success

Ray’s underlying drive is that he fears boredom and mediocrity much more than failure.

When I quit my Job I didn’t know this at the time but I was getting rid of boredom in my life and opening up myself to the possibility of failure.

If you can be humble enough to reflect on your failure and see it as an opportunity to learn from then you are starting to become more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Why I quit my Job

I decided to quit my job and follow my dream because it will challenge me as a person. It will test me to see how I handle being uncomfortable. It will test how I handle failure.

I am so good at avoiding fear. I’m a master procrastinator.

As I confront my fears and start staring them in the face I am learning more and more about myself and how I handle uncomfortable situations.

Its good to be back

A friend of mine DK said to me “Its good to have you back”

It feels good to be back DK

When you are living a life where you feel like you have to put a mask on every day it can drain everything out of you.

Now that I am living life on my terms, I feel like I can be myself again.

I can express myself

I can make mistakes

I can make spelling errors (I make them all the time, but I don’t let it stop me from writing)

I can be myself and I love it

Karl Oftebro

My Message to you

Don’t do anything drastic like go out and quit your Job. Start Small. Find something that makes you uncomfortable and try it for 3min and see how you do.

Seek out small moments of discomfort to test yourself and see how you react.

You may run for the hills the first few times.

I know I did.

It will get better and it will get easier as you practice getting more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Find something today that you can try becoming more comfortable being uncomfortable, you may surprise yourself and find something amazing.

The Day My Life Changed

The Day My Life Changed

It was the 21st July 2016 I had just arrived at King Shaka Airport contemplating what had happened to me that morning.

I was going through a bad patch in my life.

Things weren’t going my way.

I was working a corporate job and my boss told me:

You need to take some time off.

You are unproductive.

Me? Unproductive?

I felt like this

Karl Oftebro The day that changed my life

I was all about being effective and efficient. Working long hours until you could hardly keep your eyes open. That’s what the working world is all about. Isn’t it?

That’s what we have been led to believe

I packed up my laptop and left the office. My head was spinning.

What happened to me? Where did I go wrong? Was I a failure?

My friends Justin and Roxy were in town, I met up with them for lunch. They were due to have their first child in 10 weeks. It was so good to see them and catch up.

How is it that we let these special relationships suffer over working longer hours in our job to make money for someone else?

It was so good to see Justin and Roxy it made the day a little brighter but as I started to hear all about what they had been doing and were doing it made me feel like I was doing nothing with my life. My head started spinning again.

One word of advice. Everyone is different. Stop comparing yourself to everyone around you.

Everyone is on their own journey. You don’t know what they are going through so always be nice to the people around you.

DMwithKarl Your Journey

I said goodbye to Justin and Roxy and headed to King Shaka Airport. My sister Gigi and my brother in law Mike were coming to visit from the UK. My boss actually had really good timing telling me to take some time off.

Another word of Advice when you are going through a bad patch look to your family and close friends for support. I have the best family and friends that supported me all through this tough time.

Sitting at the airport waiting I had some time to kill. I started searching online for some solutions.

I was scrolling through YouTube when I came across a video from Mr Jim Rohn.

Jim Rohn said

We must all suffer one of two things:

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret

Don’t return to what hasn’t worked

A broken relationship ends for a good reason, we should never go back to the same thing, expecting different results, without something being different.

He ended his video with

To have more than you’ve got

Become more than you are

For things to change

You have to change

Daily Discipline

This really struck me. Was I really the problem?

Was I the cause of my failure? Of me not achieving my dreams?

I decided then and there that I was going to change.

I was going to make my life better.

I was going to start living my life my dream life.

A lot has happened since then.

I am proud to say that I quit my Job, I started my online business and I started living my dream every single day. It is all because I have learnt how to harness the power of Personal Digital Development.

21st July 2016 this was the day I discovered Personal Digital Development by Mr Jim Rohn, he has been instrumental in my life since then even though I have never met him.

Now think about this for a second here is a man I have never met but he has managed to make a massive impact in my life.

How is this possible?

This is the power of Personal Digital Development.

When I went through my bad patch in my life in July 2016 I came across this book on our bookshelf at home while visiting my Mum. It was a gift to my sister from my Dad in 2004. I recognized Jim Rohn from the YouTube Videos I had seen and I enjoyed his motivational quotes. I picked it up and started reading.

Jim Rohn

It made me think, was I missing a piece.

I read it so quickly I couldn’t put it down. I got to the end of the book and felt like I had just had the most amazing eye opening experience.

I felt motivated, energized and excited for the first time in a long time.

As I finished the book and looked at the back cover.

Two things stood out for me.

Tony Robbins – I had heard of this guy and I remember my Dad telling me about him back in the day.

The other thing that I noticed was that he left a link to his website

So I typed the url into my laptop and look what I found

Jim Rohn Website Screenshot

I immediately signed up for his secrets to setting exciting goals, I was already excited and now Jim was going to help me even more.

I loved his goal setting secrets so I went back to the site to find out more about Jim.

I noticed right after goal setting was Personal Development.

I had never heard of this apart from seeing the Personal Development section in the book store and thinking to myself don’t ever let yourself go in there. That will be a low point in your life.

So I avoided this scary topic.

I scrolled down on his website to find

Jim Rohn One Year Success Plan

I got even more excited. This was my chance to be successful. This is my chance to change.

This is my chance to start realizing my dreams. I signed up for the Jim Rohn One-Year Success Plan.

For a small price I got access to a full year plan on how I could become successful.

2 Years Later I am writing this blog post from my Laptop in a coffee shop.

I have quit my job, no boss to tell me what to do.

I have achieved my Goal of Freedom, I can work when I want where I want on my own terms.

I have started my own Business doing what I love, I have already helped 1072 people learn how to create their own website.

Karl Oftebro Living my Dream

If you had told me that I would achieve all of this in such a short space of time I would not have believed you.

I had different plans for myself. I had great plans. I had dreams.

I just didn’t know what I needed to do in order to achieve my dreams.

Then one day I came across a video of Mr Jim Rohn on YouTube.

I didn’t know it then but that day changed my life forever.

Mr Rohn was teaching a seminar and he said

For things to change you have to change

I thought no this can’t be right

I have to change

But everyone always told me that I never have to change

Change is bad

Why must I change?

Can’t things just happen?

Then I started to realize he was right

I was the problem

I was the reason why I wasn’t achieving any of my dreams

I started to listen to more of what Mr Jim Rohn had to say

He has so much value available online

He has given so much to us
